hCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, it is a hormone that is naturally produced by the placenta in pregnant women. When hCG is injected into an individual, combined with a low calorie diet, the hCG allows the body’s fat to be burned and used as fuel, the hCG hormone aids in appetite suppression. The injection is given with a tiny insulin syringe into the abdominal fat.
The hCG diet was designed by Dr. Albert T.W. Simeons, a British endocrinologist, over 50 years ago. The premise of the hCG diet is that obesity is a condition originating in the diencephalon (a part of the brain that regulates body processes and metabolism) in its ability to regulate fat. Dr. Simeons showed that low calorie diets (void of fats, carbohydrates, sugars) could allow for rapid weight loss particularly targeting abnormal fatty deposits (spare tire, belly fat, hips and thighs) while sparing healthy/normal fat deposits (i.e. face).
The hCG diet will direct the body to consume fats as its primary energy source turning the body into a fat burning machine. The fat loss comes from undesirable places such as abnormal fatty deposits (i.e. belly fat). We are all bombarded with new diets all the time that all promise the same thing. A quick fix to weight loss.
The truth is there is no quick fix. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is through lifestyle and diet changes. This diet teaches people a lot about food as well as portion sizes and what they can and cannot eat if they want to lose weight and keep it off. This is a life changing diet and is intended for obese individuals who are at a high risk for serious health conditions because of their weight (i.e. heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc). I believe the hCG diet is a much better option than OTC or doctor prescribed weight loss pills or surgical intervention (bariatric surgery, liposuction, etc). I have been practicing medicine for over 10 years and have seen countless people suffer unnecessarily from serious health related disease due to obesity.
